If you've started planning a trip to northern Vietnam, you've probably seen "Ninh Binh" and "Tam Coc" used interchangeably online. They're not the same place.

The simple version

  • Ninh Binh is the province (and the provincial capital city)
  • Tam Coc is a small village inside Ninh Binh province, about 8 km from the city
  • Most "Ninh Binh" photos you've seen on Instagram are actually taken in Tam Coc, Trang An or Hang Mua — three sites in the countryside, not the city

Where should you base yourself?

For 95% of foreign travelers: stay in Tam Coc village, not Ninh Binh city.

Ninh Binh city is a regular Vietnamese town. It has good banh cuon and a couple of nice cafes, but no scenery and limited English. You'd then taxi 20 minutes to anything worth seeing.

Tam Coc village sits at the foot of the karsts. You can walk to the river boat ramp, bike to Bich Dong pagoda, and motorbike to Hang Mua in 10 minutes. Restaurants and guesthouses are tourist-friendly with English menus.

Trang An is even closer to the famous boat tours but has fewer restaurants and feels remote at night.
