Renting a bicycle in Tam Coc is the most underrated thing to do here. The roads are flat, traffic is minimal, and you can cover all the major sights in half a day for $2 in bike rental.

Where to rent

Most hotels rent bikes for 30,000-50,000 VND ($1.50-2) per day. Quality varies — test the brakes and tyres before leaving. Battery-assist bikes ("xe đạp điện") cost $4-6 and are worth it in summer heat.

Route 1: Easy 1-hour loop (5 km)

For: first-timers, families with kids, golden hour photos.

Start at Tam Coc Wharf → ride south along the river bank → cross the small bridge → return on the parallel paddy road. You'll pass rice paddies and small village shops.

Best at 4-5 PM when boats return and rowers walk back through the village.

Route 2: Bich Dong & Thai Vi Temple (12 km, 2-3 hours)

For: fit travelers, photographers, anyone with half a morning.

Tam Coc Wharf → Bich Dong Pagoda (3 km, 15 min) → continue past the back of the karsts → Thai Vi Temple (4 km, 25 min) → return through the rice paddies past Hang Mua (8 km loop back).

You'll pass through villages where children wave at every cyclist. Bring small change for cold coconut at $1 per stop.

Route 3: Half-day to Hoa Lu (28 km, 4-5 hours)

For: experienced cyclists.

Tam Coc → Trang An back roads → Hoa Lu Ancient Capital → return via the main road. Mostly flat with one small climb. Total elevation gain ~80 m.

Pack water, sunscreen and a small repair kit. Some sections have no shade.

Tips

  • Cycle early (6-9 AM) or late (4-6 PM) to avoid peak heat.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses — Vietnamese sun is intense even in October.
  • Stay on dirt paddy roads, not the highway.
  • Drivers honk to warn, not to bully — don't be alarmed.
  • A 50,000 VND note buys you a great bowl of pho at any village stall.

What you'll see

Water buffalo grazing, women planting rice, kids playing soccer, dogs napping in shade, occasional limestone karsts rising straight from flooded paddies. This is rural Vietnam at its most photogenic.
