How to Book Bus Tickets in Vietnam Without Getting Scammed

Common bus booking scams in Vietnam and how to avoid them: the bait-and-switch bus, the 'free' transfer fee, the night-bus seat downgrade. What real travelers actually pay.

Bus travel in Vietnam is generally safe and reliable — but the booking layer attracts scammers, especially in tourist areas like Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoi An and Hue. Here are the most common scams we hear about every week, and how to avoid them.

Scam 1: The bait-and-switch bus

You book a "VIP cabin sleeper" but show up to a 30-year-old bus with reclining seats. The agent shrugs and says the VIP bus "broke down." You're 5 minutes from departure with no other option.

How to avoid: book through operators that publish photos of the specific vehicle they'll use, with license plate visible. Refuse to board if the vehicle doesn't match.

Scam 2: The "free hotel pickup" fee

You book a $12 limousine van advertising free hotel pickup. At pickup, the driver says you owe an extra $5 "fuel fee" or "highway toll." If you don't pay, he leaves without you.

How to avoid: get pickup confirmation in writing on WhatsApp before the trip, with the price clearly stated. Reputable operators never charge add-ons at pickup.

Scam 3: The phantom seat number

You're sold a "lower-deck cabin seat" but on board there's no seat number assignment — first come first served. You end up in an upper-deck cabin near the toilet for a 9-hour ride.

How to avoid: insist on a specific cabin number on your ticket (e.g. "C-08 lower deck"). If the operator can't provide one, the seat assignment is fake.

Scam 4: The fake travel agency

A street agency in Hanoi Old Quarter sells you "Sinh Tourist" or "Futa Bus" tickets at face value. The tickets are real but not for the operator advertised — they're for a random small operator with an old vehicle. The agency pockets the difference.

How to avoid: book directly with the named operator, or with online booking platforms that show operator ratings (12go, Bookaway, TamCoc Express).

Scam 5: The "two prices" airport pickup

You arrive at Hanoi airport, agree on $20 for a private car to Tam Coc with a driver outside. At Tam Coc, he demands $40 because "the original price was per person." Or "the meter ran longer than expected."

How to avoid: use Grab from the airport (always metered, English-speaking app), or pre-book through your hotel with a written confirmation.

What you should actually pay (2026 rates)

  • Tam Coc → Hanoi (limousine): $12-15
  • Hanoi → Sapa (cabin sleeper): $20-30
  • Hue → Hoi An (van): $15-20
  • Tam Coc → Phong Nha (overnight bus): $18-25
  • Hanoi airport private car: $25-35 to centre

Anything significantly above is a tourist tax. Anything significantly below is suspicious.

Red flags in any booking

  • Cash-only with no receipt
  • WhatsApp number with no business profile
  • Pressure to "decide right now or lose the seat"
  • Refusal to share the operator name
  • No phone support number you can call back

Safe booking checklist

Before paying anything, confirm in writing:

  1. Operator name + vehicle type
  2. Departure time + pickup address
  3. Total price (no add-ons)
  4. Cancellation policy
  5. Support contact

Frequently asked questions

Are tour agencies in Hanoi Old Quarter safe?

Some are excellent, others are pure scams. Stick to operators with strong online reviews and a physical office you can revisit.

Is paying online safer than paying on pickup?

Both work if the operator is legit. Card payments give you chargeback protection; cash on pickup gives you the option to refuse if the vehicle is wrong.

What if I'm already on a scam bus?

Stay calm, pay the fare to get off safely, and report the operator on Google Maps + Tripadvisor afterwards. Don't argue with drivers in remote areas.

Does TamCoc Express vet operators?

Yes — every operator on our platform has a verified license, vehicle photos and a 90-day customer satisfaction floor of 4.5/5.
